Allows you to create symbolic links on NTFS volumes. When you create a symbolic link, you can point it to any location on any NTFS volume or directory. That way, you can move your applications around without affecting the original location of the application, and you can even create links to other drives.

SymLink performs two functions:

Makes it possible to make a directory appear to be another directory. For example, a symbolic link named a.txt can be made to point to the directory c:\test\bin\defect.
Makes it possible to make a directory appear to be a file. The command mklink /H a.txt c:\test\bin\defect creates a file named a.txt that is in the directory c:\test\bin. The /H option causes the symbolic link to be hidden, i.e., it will be invisible to most Windows Explorer tools.
Makes it possible to point to files on other drives. The command mklink /H c:\myapp\a.txt d:\another_app\another.txt creates a file named a.txt on the drive d:\another_app\another.txt. The /H option is not used if the file or directory is already present on that drive.

Windows Explorer.
Display a help message and quit.
Interactively create symbolic links to directories.
Do not overwrite existing files, even if they have the same name as

Display the full path of symbolic links, including absolute paths.
Relative symbolic links work like absolute symbolic links.

This article does not apply to Windows Server 2000, Windows 2000 Server, or Windows NT 5.1.

I did a quick search for this utility and found nothing. This can be a really handy feature in making Windows boot from multiple drives and partitioning in the same computer but I couldn’t find it anywhere. It’s not very often that you find such a small utility.

This may be the old SymLink 1.0 utility. It does work on Windows 2000 but does not work in Windows NT or Windows Server 2000. That’s OK but I would like to say that it was one of the best utilities I have seen. I used it extensively on the 486 system that I first built years ago.

If you are running Windows Server 2000 you should be able to download the old version of the utility from the SymLink 1.0 homepage.

The SymLink utility is designed to be a small window utility. It can create and delete symbolic links on NTFS 5 volumes.

You can map any directory on Windows 2000 or later to any other directory and drive just like Unix has permitted for decades!

Obvious uses include moving applications out of c: to free up space but having them all continue to appear in c:program files or even making the cumbersome drive letter system appear to vanish.
