Hitherto, large screening tests which could be performed at the level of the patient rather than an assay that required a technician to read a slide were not commercially available. More importantly, the ability to visualize a blood sample on an agar plate (e.g., blood smears) or in a growth medium (e.g., blood agar) was not available in a simple and rapid manner. It has been known for many years that infections could be effectively treated and cured by the selective culture and/or modification of certain pathogenic organisms isolated from an individual patient. For example, an abscess caused by staphylococcus could be cured by exposing the material to a penicillin. However, antibiotics were first discovered as a means of combatting infections by the addition of various drugs to food and water. As agriculture developed, antibiotics were also used to treat livestock and eventually to control disease in domestic animals. However, despite the early discovery of antibiotics, no practical, inexpensive, and effective means of screening for infectious organisms was available. In the 1950’s, Dr. Robert Koch identified staphylococcus and streptococcus species as causative agents of disease and went on to develop therapeutic strategies for combating the organisms. Prior to the Koch work, the various bacteria infecting humans were named “bacilli” and were not recognized as a specific disease-causing species. Although the Koch work was ultimately a major contribution to human medicine, Dr. Koch’s results did not immediately put an end to the widespread use of antibiotics because patients were not checked for infectious agents and antibiotics were only used to treat certain infections. The obvious need for accurate and inexpensive test methods for screening for infectious agents 6d1f23a050
